Noisy Book Club Book of the Week
You know those times when there's something that you know your kid will love, but they’re hesitant about trying because it feels new and scary?
Skateboard lesson? Argh!
Holiday club? Bleurgh!
Birthday party? Freak out!
Those moments are tough. You’re sure they’ll have a great time. But getting them there... that's hard. Do you force them and feel like a meany? Try to convince them and let their hesitation win? Explain how great it is… but just feel like a nag? There are no fun options.
So read this book with them instead: What If...? by Anthony Brown
Joe is invited to a party. He really doesn't want to go. On the walk there, he finds plenty of reasons why he and his mum should turn around. But he doesn't give up. He keeps going. And it turns out he loves a party and ends the book wanting to host one of his own. Result! On top of that, we learn that adults have little moments of 'What if...?' too.
Also, as in all the Anthony Browne books, the illustrations are great.
And there's a great little example of not giving up. Instead of turning back because he's lost the door number, his mum suggests they try working out which house it is themselves. Good problem solving!
